My Year as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member

You are here

Middle school youth are my favorite age group to work with because of their desire to learn and play at the same time. In this age group students are undergoing immense physical, emotional, and intellectual changes and it can be a difficult time for everyone including students, parents, families and teachers. As the Community Engagement Coordinator for Enka Community School, I've realized the significance of the middle school years and how providing family and community support to students can make a powerful, positive impact on Anna and United Way staff at the annual retreat.their lives.

I applied for the AmeriCorps VISTA position for many reasons. I wanted to:

  • work with youth and their families
  • strengthen my skills in grant writing, event planning, and volunteer coordination
  • work in an environment that encouraged taking initiative, leadership, and professional development
  • and, last but definitely not least, I wanted to serve my community!

This year I've been able to bring my passions for community service and education to the Enka Middle Community School Initiative. I have been able to continue and build upon the great work of the previous AmeriCorps VISTA members, develop and implement a variety of fun and educational family programs, and strengthen community support at the school by providing a range of volunteer opportunities and projects. It has been an incredible journey and adventure and I know I will look back on my VISTA experience as a year of tremendous personal and professional growth.
