Ed’s son, John, lost his only child, his marriage and his job. John’s been drinking regularly and started saying things that made Ed believe he would take his own life. Our 2-1-1 referral specialist was able to connect John to a mobile crisis team that could get him that help, right away. When our referral specialist followed up a few weeks later to see how everything was going, he told her: “I’ve lost so much; it’s been hard to see anything else. I’m seeing a counselor and so far, I haven’t had a drink. I’ve got a long road ahead, but I don’t want to end my life. I don’t think I would’ve reached out for help if my Dad hadn’t called you.”
More than 9,000 Buncombe County residents called NC 2-1-1 for information about mental health and addictions services last year.
Ed and John are not alone and your support for our work at United Way, ensures that we can be there for you, and your neighbors, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
