The Power of One, The Power of Many
July marked a BIG anniversary for me. Not with my spouse or my job, but with my Little Sister. I have been part of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of WNC for over a decade and currently with my second “little.” This month we celebrated our ninth anniversary at my house over homemade lasagna, salad, and cherry pie (a menu designed by my Little Sister) and reflected on things we have accomplished over the years...crafting, learning to swim, introducing her to musicals, creating flash cards for middle school language arts, and problem solving the challenges of starting high school.
After our dinner date, I spent a lot of time thinking about impact: the impact of our relationship on each other, the impact of Big Brothers, Big Sisters on other matches and the impact of other organizations doing great work with thousands of people in our community. Which brings me to United Way. While I am just one person working with one young lady through one agency, United Way is working with dozens of agencies helping thousands of our neighbors every day.
The Power of Partnership
I have been fortunate enough to work alongside United Way in my professional career with Asheville Radio Group, too. We partner with United Way on so many initiatives throughout the year from the School Supply Drive with Hands On Asheville-Buncombe and the Sports Equipment Drive to the NC 2-1-1 call in service and the Annual Campaign. As a company, we see a huge value in investing resources and time in United Way. We see our support more as a partnership in that we can co-brand with many United Way initiatives to a loyal audience of their engaged donors and volunteers. I truly feel that United Way and the agencies that get support from United Way's Community Investment Fund are making big impacts in our community at a local level and providing leadership in areas like education and advocacy that changes lives every day.
