In the final months of 2014, "Building a Stronger North Carolina: A Legislative Briefing and Call to Action" has been presented in cities around the state. A full-capacity crowd of elected officials, community leaders, nonprofit staff and volunteers, business members, and interested citizens from throughout western North Carolina gathered at AB Tech's Enka campus on December 11 for the Asheville stop on the tour. There, they learned about the recently completed legislative session of the NC General Assembly and heard a forecast of opportunities and challenges for the upcoming session from representatives of the NC Budget & Tax Center and United Way of North Carolina.
Throughout this session, guests had opportunities to ask questions and learn facts that can be put into action. Topics included:
- Information on North Carolina’s economic recovery and how families are faring.
- Overview of the state budget decisions and how the state is addressing the areas of Education, Income and Health.
- Regional and local data on the economy and impacts of policy decisions
- Tools to make an impact on the issues you care most about. Join with others to focus your local advocacy for the greatest result.
One key part of this year’s event was a local presentation on the nonpartisan efforts of many groups to register, educate, and turn-out voters for the 2014 election.
