Advocacy Alert: National Service Programs

You are here

The following alert comes from "Voices for National Service"

We need your help TODAY to protect national service funding.

Over the weekend, The New York Times reported that the Corporation for National and Community Service and AmeriCorps may be among federal programs being considered for elimination in the Administration's budget. We need your help to make sure that doesn't happen.

Act now. Call your member of Congress and tell them to protect national service funding.

AmeriCorps and Senior Corps have overwhelming support among American voters across party lines, and are delivering results for communities across the country.

We need to ask Congress to protect the federal investment in these programs that mean so much to our citizens and our country.

Please share this message with your networks and encourage them to call today.

Now more than ever, we need to show the strength of our movement.

Yours in Service,

AnnMaura Connolly
President

Why is United Way Urging Advocacy for National Service Programs?

Communities across this country have long utilized the AmeriCorps/Vista and Seniorcorps programs as ways to support key social programs and community development initiatives. In our own community, United Way utilized AmeriCorps members for the first few years of our Middle School Success Initiative at Enka, Erwin and Asheville Middle Schools.

The work of these AmeriCorps Members was priceless - to our early efforts and to each of the members themselves. These team members helped to forge early relationships within the community. They conducted needs assesments and helped to organize resources that would otherwise not have been leveraged. They put in long hours for a minimal living stipend and the opportunity to build their professional skills base through service to their community.

This "domestic peace corps" program is an effective and essential tool for many community building efforts and we hope you will join us in asking our representatives to preserve their place in our communities.

Here are a few links to past stories from AmeriCorps members at United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County.
