Students@Work Week in Asheville and Buncombe County

You are here

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County was one, in a group of organizations, that helped facilitate Students @Work Week, a program for Asheville and Buncombe County middle school students.

“The goal is for North Carolina businesses to help middle school students connect the opportunities that exist in the workplace to the educational opportunities in their daily school experience,” said Sarah Roth, Volunteer Manager of Hands On Asheville-Buncombe. “Each day students went out to their workplace site visits in the morning and businesses showed them the skills required to perform well in the future.”

Middle school is a crucial time for dropout prevention and also when high school curriculum planning takes place. Direct experience with the workplace demonstrates the relevance of education to future success. In addition, students are able to better understand the knowledge and skills that 21st century workplaces demand and etablish a connection between academics and the real world of work.

“It was great to be a part of the planning committee along with so many others in the community who care about middle school students and their future,” said Roth. “The variety of businesses that students are visiting paints such a wonderful picture of the community we live and work in.”
