Follow-up: United Way's Legislative Event

On the morning of Tuesday, December 11th, 2012, more than 120 people representing nonprofit organizations, government, business, and other sectors from throughout WNC attended the 2012 Legislative Briefing at the AB Tech Enka campus.  Allan Morse, United Way Advocacy Committee chair, moderated the program.  

 

The NC State Budget

Allan Freyer, NC Budget & Tax Center, discussed the challenges of the NC economy coming out of the 2008 Recession and the impact the NC State budgets have had on jobs, nonprofits, and the key budget areas that North Carolina supports in education, health, public safety and more.  Allan also provided a forecast for the 2013 session starting late January, 2013.

 

The Impact on Education, Income and Health

Jill Cox from United Way of North Carolina outlined some of the key changes that the NC General Assembly enacted in the last two years specifically in education and financial stability.

Tax Modernization

Local presenters Elizabeth Brazas (the Community Foundation of WNC) and Jack Cecil (Biltmore Farms) discussed the issue of tax modernization and the importance that North Carolina have a tax code that provides revenues that are stable, equitable, and adequate.
