Saying Goodbye to a Dear Friend: Fred Simms

You are here

"He carried himself in a caring, thoughtful way that made it clear that he was not there just representing Fred Simms; he was there representing the community."

- Lance Edwards, director United Way's Community Investment Fund

Fred Simms passed away on December 16, unexpectedly and too, too soon.

Fred was a key volunteer for United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County for more than a decade.  He served in several leadership roles, most notably:

- Vice Chair of the Community Fund committee in 2007

- Chair of the Community Fund committee in 2008

- Board member 2007/08

Fred was chair of the Community Fund committee during the beginning of a major transition period, when Education, Income, and Health were adopted as the 3 Focus Areas used to guide the refinement of United Way’s investment process. His leadership and love for our community were so important to the authenticity of this process.

In Sunday's Citizen-Times, there is a beautiful article about Fred and his wife Jackie. Their love and impact on our world is lasting and all of us at United Way are grateful for our time with him and we wish Jackie, their daughter Charis, and all who loved them our very best.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 15th, 1PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville, 1 Edwin Place. Fred's family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to ABIPA; Building Bridges of Asheville, Inc.; or Green Opportunities.
