September is here and that means the North Carolina Mountain State Fair is, too! This year, UNC-TV is collecting books for middle school students and other local programs at the fair, which runs September 11 through September 20. United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County will distribute them through Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC, The POP Project, and Middle School Success.

"Join us at the UNC-TV booth as we celebrate the heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains," said Kamona Herring, Outreach Coordinator for UNC-TV's Educational Services Department, "Bring us your new or gently used books to donate to United Way and you may find Read-a-roo and Eagle from Space Racers thanking you with a big high-five!"

The UNC-TV booth at the Mountain State Fair is open 3:00-9:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Friday-Sunday. Read-a-roo and Eagle from Space Racers will be there on Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

This marks the third year that Women's Leadership Council has spearheaded United Way's Holiday Book and Gift Drive. Many local charities that distribute holiday gifts find that middle school students fall off the radar when people are making their donations. There are many reasons, but one is that this age can sometimes be a little harder to shop for. UNC-TV's efforts will help the collection get a kick start and ensure more local kids and teens have a gift to unwrap when the holidays arrive. A list of suggested books can be found online.

The POP Project, an Asheville-based nonprofit, will distribute the gently used books to community organizations, schools, and detention centers around Western North Carolina.
