- See More Photos -   What Kickoff is All About In years past, campaign kickoff was a time to announce a fund raising goal for the organization, said John Kimberly, 2012 campaign chair. In recent years, it has evolved into a time to get the community engaged in creating change in our community through Giving, Advocating and Volunteering in the areas of Education, Income and Health, United Way’s three focus areas and what it believes are the building blocks of a good life.“We all have a stake in our neighbors’ success, and it’s critical for people to realize that, when we come together, we have more power than we think to positively impact...

A BIG Welcome to our newest crew of Loaned Executives! Left to right: Mark Collins, Don Mandelkorn, Charlotte Sommers, Barbara Daugherty, Paula Plott, Susan Andrew, Amanda Jay, Hope Snipes, Emily Palumbo and Heath Nettles.   This week is our version of boot camp - the week-long immersion into all things LIVE UNITED.  If you see them, and they are bleary eyed, you know why.  Right now they are taking a break from the learning and are busy folding and sorting all of the Day of Caring T-Shirts for each company.  Many thanks to each for their help and best of luck in the coming weeks.

One of the unique programs our Back to School Supply Drive supports is The Augustine Project.  The Augustine Project seeks to improve the academic achievement and the self esteem of low-income children and teens who struggle with literacy skills. The Project trains tutors who provide these students free, 1-on-1, long-term, instruction in reading, writing and spelling.    Your donations are more than just pencils and paper and backpacks. Your donation of new school supplies are an incentive to continue this critical tutoring relationship - impacting the child’s academic performance and life-long self-esteem. Follow this link to see how you...

Do you remember how hard it was to go back to school and make new friends? Can you imagine having to start back to school several times in a year? That's what many kids in the foster system have to do each year. We want to help make that transition a little easier for kids - that's why this year one of the programs our Back to School Supply Drive supports will be Buncombe County Schools: Fostering Connections. You may be donating pencils and paper but donation impacts both a child’s academic performance in a new school and self-esteem among peers. Follow this link to see how you can help.

Every year kids head off for summer break, and every year parents worry about how to keep the kids engaged, out of their hair and out of trouble. Unfortunately many teachers know that they have a battle to wage when the kids emerge from summer break, it is called summer learning loss or summer brain drain - and it's the reality that key skills learned just months earlier have slipped away during break.   For those parents and caregivers, looking for ideas on engaging their kids this summer, Gina Gallo,  Youth Success Manager at United Way, has assembled a pretty hearty group of resources for you to use.  Summer Fun and Learning Resources for...

Chris Young, our 2011 Campaign Chair, noted that a challenge during the 2011-12 campaign that a majority of our focus was on companies and individuals with which we have a long history and not as much on cultivation of new business relationships.  Chris felt that it was time to create a new position on our campaign cabinet, one devoted solely to cultivation of new relationships. The best part of this idea? Not only did Chris suggest it, he stepped up to chair the effort AND he recruited a top-notch team to implement the plan. Now that's leadership! We are excited that seven former Campaign Chairs and several current board members...
