The United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County says more than 400 people from local businesses and groups volunteered their talents through 45 projects.
At Owen Middle School, volunteers helped build an Appalachian heritage garden. School staff members said they use edible and medicinal plants for lessons.
"We know that we do a great job preparing our students to be global citizens, but we also want them to be well-rounded in their Appalachian heritage, their natural heritage and their cultural heritage, and that's what this garden represents," Amanda Venturella, a volunteer, said.
Volunteers from First Bank also came into Owen Middle School classrooms to teach students about the basics of managing their money.
