Girls on the Run 5K

"It was really fun to see the girls’ faces as they rounded the last corner to the finish line and realized they were seconds away from accomplishing what they had been working towards for weeks"

We were so excited to take part in the Girls on the Run of Western North Carolina 5K race at the Asheville Outlets this weekend.

Sarah Lee Roth, Volunteer Programs Manager at Hands On Asheville-Buncombe cheered racers on throughout the course.

"It was really fun to see the girls’ faces as they rounded the last corner to the finish line and realized they were seconds away from accomplishing what they had been working towards for weeks," said Roth. "As a volunteer, it was just such a good feeling to watch the girls push through the rain and the cold to finish what they had started. It was powerful to see the community rallying around girls and their success and showing them that they can do anything."

Molly Milroy, Marketing Manager of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, was a running buddy for a 5th grade student, Aubrey, from Marble Elementary School.

"It was rainy, freezing cold, and lots of fun," said Molly Milroy, Marketing Manager of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. "It was such a treat to get to be a running buddy for Aubrey. She told me that liked singing, so we sang 'Fight Song' all the way to the finish line!"

About Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is a life-changing, non-profit program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Their mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

The 20-lesson Girls on the Run curriculum combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem solving skills and make healthy decisions. All of this is accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.

Girls on the Run of Western North Carolina is one of our funded partners and member of the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network.

Congratulations to the 510 Fall 2016 program participants and thank you to the wonderful coaches and GOTR 5k volunteers who make these great programs possible!
