7th Grade Girls at Erwin Middle Hold Drive for Emma Resource Center

Jayme Davis of Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC is a bit of a rockstar for a lot of reasons, but today it's because of a project she's doing out at Erwin Middle school with a group of 7th grade girls who have joined a Mentoring Group there. This is a fairly new idea - developing a group mentoring experience. It helps some new volunteers feel less intimidated by a one on one mentorship experience and adds the dynamic excitement that comes from bringing a group of people together. We're excited to see how it plays out at Erwin.

We'll have more on this and other projects in the months to come but Jayme just let us know this really sweet and caring story and thought you'd appreciate it too.

Jayme and Katie, one of United Way's four social work interns from Western Carolina University, brainstormed some volunteer project ideas with the girls - something they could all do together, to benefit others in their community. Together they decided to orchestrate a  Food and Hygiene Drive to benefit the Emma Family Resource Center. Katie contacted the Resource Center about their needs, and the girls made signs and posted them around the school. The donation box is in the library, and the librarian is giving 25 cents off overdue fines for every item turned in. This great group of girls seem very excited to be helping others!
