Asheville City/Buncombe County Public Services held a Chili Cookoff on Friday to drum up interest and support for their United Way campaign.
Many thanks to everyone that came out to cook, to eat, to cheer each other on. Special thanks to Chief Burnette, Chief Anderson and Sherrif Duncan for their leadership in making this happen and to our celebrity judges: representing Bouchon - Bill Cooke, from Pack's Tavern - Ross Franklin, and Emily Patrick the new food writer at Mt. Xpress.
But here's what everyone wants to know, who won?
16 Teams made Chili but only four could be crowned a winner:
The “Like a Precious Snowflake” award (Most Unique) went to team 3 Hots and a Cot from the Sheriff’s Dept. Detention Center with their entry Jail House Crock- a combination of black bean chili, pull pork ribs, pico di gallo and sour cream!
The “We Don’t Need no Stinking Antacids” award (Best Mild) went to the Sheriff’s Dept. team Hot Tamale Badge Bunnies with their spicy chocolate chili entry.
The “I Think My Esophagus is Now Perforated” (Best Hot) award went to team Grease Monkeys with their entry Hot Trash Truck Chili!
And “The Rest of Y’all Can Go on Home Now” award (all around best chili) went to team Transportation Redefines Chili with their entry Ken Putnam’s Vegan Chili.
