225 Backpacks for Area Kids! Help Us Reach 800!

You are here

Himanshu Karvir, a Leadership Giver and member of Highlands Circle, just delivered 225 backpacks for our Back-to-School Supply Drive. We're collecting rulers, pencils, calculators and more through the end of the month. Backpacks are usually one of the harder items to get so these will go a long way to our goal of 800 fully-stocked backpacks for elementary and middle school kids in Asheville and Buncombe County.

Himanshu Karvir and Michelle BennettHimanshu, with Holiday Inn Biltmore West, was able to provide this huge gift by doing something pretty simple: he asked his friends and colleagues to help. That's when Satis Patel with the Clarion Inn Airport, Bob Patel with Bhuna Corporation, Hites Patel and Sandeep Gupta with Carolina Furniture Concepts responded.

You can help, too, in a way that matters to you. Whether you spearhead a mini-drive by asking your friends and co-workers, make an online donation, or drop off supplies at one of the locations listed online, united as a community we can make sure every student in our area starts the year off with the skills to succeed.

Do We Need a School Supply Drive in Asheville?

  • Nearly 1 in 4 children in Buncombe County live in poverty.
  • 50% of Buncombe County students are enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
  • Last year, United Way’s 2-1-1 was contacted by 194 families who needed help providing school supplies for their children.

School Supplies

For many families, these are more than statistics; financial difficulties are a daily reality. We're uniting community members to eliminate a challenge for these families. We want to make sure every kid has a positive back-to school experience. We want to remove the barriers that make the difference between a student eventually graduating or dropping out.

Last year’s Back-to-School Supply Drive met the needs of 738 elementary and middle school students. At an estimated $60 per fully-stocked bag, the worth of last year’s donations equaled $44,000! Help us equip even more Asheville-Buncombe students with the supplies they’ll need to succeed.
