Employees from the City of Asheville and Buncombe County Government battled for bragging rights (and some unique trophies) at the Third Annual Public Services Chili Cook-off. About 75 tasters judged the 18 teams' different takes on the American autumn staple. And what better place to enjoy chili than a firehouse? The downtown fire station has recently been renamed in honor of Gus Werhan, who died fighting a downtown fire in 1963.
Bragging Rights were assigned to the following teams:
- Best Overall: Best Practices in Appetite Remediation's 7 Pepper Short Rib Chili (Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services)
- Spiciest: Jail House Crock's Mystery Meat Chili (Buncombe County Sheriff's Department Detention Center), winning the category for the THIRD YEAR IN A ROW!
- Mild, Not Meek: Chili Chili Bang Bang's Intestinal Express Chili (Asheville Water Department)
- Most Unique: Robin Rice & City of Asheville Human Resources Department's White Chicken Chili
Big thanks go out to these guys! Working together, the City of Asheville and Buncombe County Government raised almost $800 today for United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. All the chefs are surely already plotting and perfecting recipes for next year.
