NC 2-1-1 Resources for a Cold Fall and Winter

You are here

Winter officially starts December 21, but here in WNC we have already experienced the first chills of the season. With The Old Farmer's Almanac predicting snow flurries as early as the end of October, NC 2-1-1 is organizing our resources to best serve callers affected by the cold.

2-1-1 Resource LinePrograms we often refer callers to include winter clothing resources, or places that pay for or provide new or secondhand coats, gloves, hats, scarfs and other winter clothing.

For individuals who are concerned about the cost of heating their homes, we refer to agencies distributing firewood, utility payment assistance and federal funds. Federal funds for heating are designed to alleviate the cost burden of extreme temperatures through lump payments directly to the oil, gas or electric company of the consumer. Eligibility requirements, distributing agencies and start times for these programs differ, so please call us (dial 2-1-1 from any phone) for clarification on how and where to apply. You can find more information on heat, utility and weatherization assistance on our website.

NC 2-1-1 also has more resources like shelters, hot meal sites, furnace repair and other resources that support our community during cold weather. If you need more information on food assistance programs or would like to donate to a food bank, please click here.
