Leaders from the education and nonprofit sectors, as well as those from the community as a whole, joined us on November 14 for an announcement breakfast. Our goal is to use the power of the Summit to leverage greater awareness and support for the high quality work already underway to support middle school students, families, schools, and neighborhoods and ultimately improve graduation rates.

 

 

McCormick Field United Way Baseball7. Sports Supply Drive at McCormick Field

The Peaks Society kicked off its inaugural Sports Equipment Drive on May 27 by collecting items at McCormick Field. Thanks to the Asheville Braves baseball and softball teams, UNC Asheville Bulldogs and other Asheville Tourists fans, the drive got off to a fantastic start. We collected 17 bags of bats, balls, cleats, helmets and more. An added bonus: the Tourists beat the Lexington Legends.

 

 

Asheville Buncombe United Way8. LIVE UNITED Celebration

Last year, we took the Building Blocks game on the road during campaign, building a tower of blocks with inspcriptions related to education, income and health. As people participated, they leaned in to hear what was being said; anxious to see how long the tower could last. As each block was read out loud people connected to their own life story or that of a friend or family member. At our annual Celebration, we created a larger size version to illustrate how your investments make a difference.

 

 

South Slope Green Man Brewing French Broad Chocolate9. Exploring the South Slope

Just over 100 members of Highlands Circle, Women's Leadership Council and the Peaks Society (and their friends) went on a behind-the-scenes tour of businesses in the South Slope district located on Buxton Avenue, meeting the owners of Green Man Brewery and French Broad Chocolate Factory & Tasting Room, as well as the chance to hear about their expansion plans and more on the horizon.

 

 

10. Kia Soul Giveaway

For the first time, we had a pretty big incentive for donors. Paramount Kia of Asheville donated a Kia Soul and it helped increase new donations to the Community Investment Fund by nearly $100,000. On February 25, ten finalists and their cheering sections gathered to see who would win the new ride. Finalists drew keys and tried them one-by-one to see which would unlock the Kia Soul.
