Perhaps you think the over 6,000+ calls NC 2-1-1 received this year for housing expense assistance all received the same list of resources. Actually, every caller we speak to receives referrals customized to their needs and experiences. Housing, like most basic needs in WNC, can be complicated so NC 2-1-1 referral specialists are rigorously trained so we can simplify the process for accessing basic needs for our callers.
Referrals specialists begin their work in the call center with approximately 25 hours of intensive one on one instruction, even before they start answering calls. This initial training includes learning requirements for different helping organizations in our service areas so that callers are given referrals that will be able to assist them. Training is continued throughout the year, including monthly intensive in-services. So be assured every time you call NC 2-1-1 that your needs will be dealt with by an experienced trained professional.
For callers looking for housing assistance, specialists triage the needs of the caller by asking a series of questions, often including, "Do you need help with your rent? Are you seeking deposit help? Do you need shelters?"
These type of questions change according to the callers needs and enable a referral specialist to ensure that each caller gets information and referrals according to their exact needs.
