At our annual LIVE UNITED Celebration, we usually share a few highlights from the past year. However, this year's event was a chance to talk to the sold out crowd about decisions made in 2014 that will evolve how we operate in the years to come. After conducting an extensive community needs assessment in 2010, we established Middle School Success with a focus on increasing the quality and quantity of out of school time programs.
Working with our schools and nonprofit service providers in an effort to support what works well, identify new opportunities and help find new resources, the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network (ABMGN) took shape. Our collective work is already garnering national attention and we've been selected as one of just 100 communities to host a GradNation Summit. We hope you will join other community members at that event on March 12 as we discuss ways to create a community in which our kids not only make it to high school graduation, but also thrive while on that path and beyond.
Last year, our Board of Directors approved a plan that places Reducing the Impact of Poverty front and center and builds on the exciting work already started by ABMGN. The idea is to wrap services and interventions for students, families and neighborhoods around three middle schools—Enka, Erwin and Asheville—by 2017. We’ve already started this work at Enka Middle and are excited about what is beginning to unfold.
As a part of this new strategic plan, we continue to invest in high-quality programs in the areas of education, income and health through our competitive grants process; provide high quality information and referral through NC 2-1-1 Asheville Center; and connect people to serve others through our volunteer center, Hands On Asheville-Buncombe. We'll keep you informed of our progress along the way and hope you'll play an active part.
