In preparation for the GradNation Community Summit that took place on March 12, students from area middle schools created artwork. They represent their interpretations of the Five Promises to children and youth that form the conditions they need to achieve adult success: Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, Effective Education and Opportunities to Help Others. When at least four of these promises are at work in young people’s lives, they are more likely to succeed academically, socially and civically.
The interpretations are as diverse as the students themselves, but we can all agree there's a lot of talent in Asheville and Buncombe County!
Thank you to students from the following schools for their contributions:
- Asheville Middle School
- Enka Middle School
- Erwin Middle School
- North Buncombe Middle School
- Valley Springs Middle School
Buncombe County was selected as one of 100 communities to host a GradNation Summit. We used it as a chance to enhance and expand the work already underway in our community by the Asheville-Buncombe Middle Grades Network to create success-ready ninth graders who go on to graduate. Community Schools will serve as the foundation of the continued initiative to make sure every student is equipped for college and/or career.
