IMPACT. What volunteers did in two days, changed people's lives forever

As one of the newest staff members here at United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, I was told about Days of Impact when I first came on board and had been looking forward to the two-day volunteer event ever since. In the weeks proceeding, I was told that I would get a chance to see what this community was all about and I have to admit, I wasn’t disappointed.

Duke Energy tackles the grounds at Owen Middle School

Last week, Duke Energy had over a dozen volunteers working out at Owen Middle School. Volunteers spread a base layer of mulch on a soon-to-be ropes course, as well as built some low elements of the ropes course. Volunteers also cleared invasive species to make room for outdoor classrooms. All of these projects are part of Owen Middle School's Natural Impact Initiative.

Read Across America Day

How many of us have fallen head-over-heels for a book? There is nothing like joy that comes from the emotions and relationships between characters, the sights and sounds of a new fictional world, the magnitude of historic moments in our history, or the chance to explore the tiniest mysteries of this planet through the eyes of scientists.

Girls on the Run 5K

"It was really fun to see the girls’ faces as they rounded the last corner to the finish line and realized they were seconds away from accomplishing what they had been working towards for weeks"

We were so excited to take part in the Girls on the Run of Western North Carolina 5K race at the Asheville Outlets this weekend.

Volunteering at Enka Middle School

Lindsay Stalowy is entering her second year as a volunteer at Enka Middle School. Here's what she said about the experience:

"Volunteering as a Mentor at Enka Middle School has been delightfully rewarding for me," said Stalowy. "I meet with my mentee just once a week but the lives of these children can change dramatically in such short periods of time. She has opened my eyes to the struggles that young girls experience in our community."

Spotlight: Swati Patel's Family Supports Students

Every year our School Supply Drive gets bigger and bigger. Last year, as a result of this drive, 1,350 elementary and middle school aged children received a fully stocked backpack and extra materials were sent to local teachers. This year we reached a record setting 1,754! This is important for each child's experience on the first day of school but also for their families who are often struggling to keep food on the table or a roof over their head.
