When a crisis is felt statewide

As a result of the historic impact of Hurricane Matthew, NC 2-1-1 handled an unprecedented number of calls, 11,000 to be exact. In addition to handling hurricane calls, 2-1-1 is also handling regular 2-1-1 calls. The total call volume thus far for hurricane calls and regular 2-1-1 calls is right at 31,000 for the 55 day span.

"To put this in perspective, NC 2-1-1, as a statewide system usually handles an average of 11,500 calls per month or 383 calls per day. However, due to NC 2-1-1’s response to the hurricane, we handled an average of 564 calls per day," said 2-1-1 Director Marla Browne. 

Our statewide leadership maintained constant contact with emergency response teams statewide to ensure our referral specialists had the latest information on relief programs for the victims of the storm. And our own information and referral staff members worked long hours to tirelessly to assist every caller with a calm and compassionate presence during a most unsettled time in their lives.
