Free Tax Preparation Resources in Buncombe County

Tax season is here, with processing by the IRS set to begin February 12 and a final filing date of April, 15, 2021. There are a variety of resources to support you in tax preparation and filing this year. United Way's national, free online tax preparation service MyFreeTaxes is available to you for self-prepared tax returns or you can visit a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site to receive assistance from a trained professional (locations listed below).

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites in Buncombe County

  1. OnTrack WNC Financial Education and Counseling: Offers free tax preparation and filing assistance, including free e-filing for federal, NC and SC state returns for those earning $54,000 and below. Appointments must be scheduled online before calling the office. Calls can also be made and a message left if you do not have Internet access.   2. Pisgah Legal Services: The Earned Income Tax Program at Pisgah Legal Services provides FREE tax preparation by IRS certified volunteers for qualifying families with a gross income of $55,000 or less. For eligibility and appointments, call 828-210-3785 and provide your name and phone number. You will receive a phone call from an EITC program screener to see if you're eligible for free tax preparation and talk out the next steps. Appointments are being conducted remotely due to COVID.
  3. AARP Tax-Aide: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides in-person and remote tax assistance free of charge to anyone, with a special focus on tax payers who are 50 and older or who have low to moderate income. Tax-aide volunteers are located nationwide and are trained and IRS-certified. Please check this website for further information.
