Yesterday, a very special group of volunteers gathered to bring a welcoming spirit to the halls and walls of Erwin Middle School, in no less than 20 different languages! Why? 17 languages are currently spoken at Erwin Middle School alone and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all students and families is an important step in ensuring they do well year round.
Our group of volunteers are collectively known as ECCs or Employee Campaign Coordinators. These amazing individuals have stepped up to help raise funds and awareness at their workplaces for United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. Their efforts have an immediate impact on key issues and real people:
- 80% of students at Erwin Middle are on free or reduced lunch and
- 30% of students are hitting one of those three key indicators (the ABCs) every year.
Donations to United Way help us channel support for those students and their families year round and so the work of the ECCs is critical toward that effort.
On behalf of Erwin Middle School and United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, we thank each of these volunteers and their employers for taking part in this mural for choosing to LIVE UNITED, year round.
