Innovative education leaders from across the country are converging in Western North Carolina November 15-18 to discuss how to achieve the Coalition for Community Schools’ bold vision of 25,000 Community Schools by 2035 — and we want you to join the conversation..

Why this vision?

Because Community Schools are an evidence-based strategy to promote equity and educational excellence for each and every child by uniting families, educators and community partners.

Why Western North Carolina?

Because Community Schools are already impacting students and families across Asheville and Buncombe County, and our school and community partners have a lot to offer to—and learn from—other Community School practitioners.

On November 18th, we are inviting leaders and stakeholders from around the region to hear from these leaders about how the Community Schools movement is impacting students and families by centering equity, leveraging community partnerships, and uplifting youth voice and leadership.

The program will include a breakfast reception, followed by remarks by Coalition for Community Schools Director José Muñoz, and focused roundtable discussions with Community School experts from around the country.

Participants will also learn about the status of Community Schools here in Buncombe County—as well as an update on the United for Youth Network, which recently embraced the following Bold Community Goal: By 2035, ALL Asheville City and Buncombe County students graduate from high school fully prepared to pursue their goals and dreams.

José Muñoz joined IEL as the director of its Coalition for Community Schools initiative in 2017. He brings over 25 years of cross-sector partnership experience for youth, family, and community development across the US.

Before IEL, he was the ABC Community School Partnership executive director. In this role, José strategically scaled up the community schools strategy from 4 to 26 schools in five years, securing over $3M  through successful policy advocacy. In 2014, José won the first Community Schools Initiative Leadership Award.

Jose also served several states through the Boys & Girls Clubs, where he earned a national legacy award for developing high-quality programs and full-service Clubs that met the needs of every child and family.

A founding member of the Southern Nevada Community Gang Task Force, Jose also serves as the Coordinator of a national model site for The Casey Foundation's Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative in Bernalillo County, NM.

The Coalition for Community School is an alliance of local, state, and national partners that advocate for more Community Schools as the best evidence-based strategy to unite schools, families, and communities to ensure all children have the support they need to be safe and healthy, access to the equal opportunities they deserve for prosperity, and a sense of responsibility for civic engagement.

The Institute for Educational Leadership partners with under-resourced communities to equip leaders to better prepare children, youth, adults, and families for postsecondary education and training, rewarding careers, and civic and community engagement.
