Emily Swan

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’ve spent my career working with kids of all ages and I believe that education should be ever-evolving. After College, I worked in group homes in Tahoe, California. I have spent fourteen summers guiding canoe trips in Northern Canada. Prior to United Way, I worked as the 6th grade Humanities teacher and the Dean of Students for French Broad River Academy, where I had the incredible opportunity to grow and learn as an educator.

Give us a glimpse into your role at United Way. How do you help us fulfill our mission? What are you most excited about accomplishing as a team?

As the Erwin Middle Community School Coordinator, I collaborate with school partnerships to support student success and family engagement. I work with school administrators and the greater community to gather resources so that all students and families can grow and thrive.

What’s your favorite thing about our community?

Asheville has a lot of opportunities to connect and to feel a part of the greater community. Whether it is river clean up, community gardening, music and dancing or attending educational gatherings, there are countless ways to get to know neighbors and other members of the greater Asheville area.

What would we find you doing when you aren’t at work?

Asheville has a lot of opportunities to connect and to feel a part of the greater community.

Do you have any podcast, book, music, or movie recommendations?

There are so many good ones, but a few that I have read recently and loved are Viloleta, by Isabel Allende, all books by Fred Chappell, and Just Mercy, by Brian Stevenson (the Young Adult version is great for kids).
