There are few moments of euphoria like crossing the finish line of a marathon or half marathon. Not only do you feel a deep sense of personal accomplishment, but the cheers from the crowd wrap you in a powerful sense of community and support. United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County (UWABC) is proud to be part of that spirit in Buncombe County. So, when we were invited to serve as the 2026 Asheville Marathon and Half’s premier charity partner, hosted by iDaph Events and sponsored by New Belgium Brewing, we were thrilled. This experience was a meaningful opportunity to raise funds and share our work in Youth Opportunity and Community Resiliency with over 2,200 runners from 43 states and 4 countries while cheering on our neighbors.
Days before the actual race, we had volunteers assisting in the runner bag preparations. On race day, some volunteers answered questions, others helped direct runners and spectators, and many passed out water—but every single one was there to cheer runners on. Of course, our volunteers were properly decked out as well, showing up in capes, United Way branded shirts, and bearing motivational signs for runners.
In addition to mobilizing over 72 volunteers to support along the race course and at water stations, eight passionate community members dedicated their runs to our work as the first UWABC Charity Runner Team. For months, they trained not only for the race, but also reached out to their networks, shared why they believe in our work, and asked their friends and family to support their efforts with donations going directly to UWABC. Collectively, these runners raised over $23,000, a huge accomplishment. However, more than fundraising and more than training, each of these Charity Runners built deep connections with one another, deeper ties to UWABC, and participated in an experience they will never forget. Running may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of UWABC, but supporting our community in all the ways we can is at the heart of what we do. And thanks to partners like iDaph Events, who believe in this work, we are able to show up in spaces like this—bringing people together and celebrating what is possible when a community moves forward United.
Thank you to all volunteers and Charity Runners who supported United Way and to iDaph for your partnership.
