There are few moments like crossing the finish line of a marathon or half marathon. Not only do you feel a deep sense of personal accomplishment, but the cheers from the crowd wrap you in a powerful sense of community and support. United Way is proud to be part of that spirit in Buncombe County. So when we were invited to serve as the 2026 Asheville Marathon and Half’s premier charity partner, hosted by IDaph Events and sponsored by New Belgium Brewing, we were thrilled. It is a meaningful opportunity to share our work with runners from across the country while cheering on our neighbors.
On March 21, race day, eight community members dedicated their runs to UWABC. For months, they trained not only for the race, but also reached out to their networks and shared why they believe in our work and chose to support it through their miles. At the same time, UWABC mobilized more than 50 volunteers from across our network. Days before the actual race, we had volunteer assiting in the runner bag preparations. On the day of the race, some volunteers answered questions, others helped direct runners and spectators, and many passed out water—but every single one was there to cheer runners on. Of course, our volunteers were properly decked out as well, showing up in capes, UWABC shirts and bearing motivational signs for the runners.
Running may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of UWABC, but supporting our community in all the ways we can is at the heart of what we do. And thanks to partners like iDaph Events, who believe in this work, we are able to show up in spaces like this—bringing people together and celebrating what is possible when a community moves forward, together.
