We're looking forward to our third United Way Kitchen Table event February 18 with Chef Ashleigh Shanti, formerly of Benne on Eagle. Guests will be cooking for a cause, with all donations from registration for this event supporting our work in partnership in the community. From the comfort of our kitchens, we'll be whipping up what Shanti says is "simple, homey, and approachable" and one of her favorite dishes to make on cold winter evenings-- Field Pea Gravy Smothered Pork Chops. Mmmm.

A Bit More About Award Winning Chef Ashleigh Shanti...

Originally from Virginia Beach, Shanti says Asheville quickly became a second home. Her cuisine pays homage to the rich African-American culinary traditions that once thrived in Southern Appalachia. She was named 2019 Eater Young Gun and a 2020 finalist for the James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year award during her time as Chef de Cuisine at Benne on Eagle. Since then, she says she's had her sights set on restaurant ownership for some time and is patiently looking forward to presenting her concepts to a community that's been incredibly supportive.

"I'm excited to team up with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County," she says "because I believe in their vision of equity and inclusion to close the disparities that exist within our community."
