Holiday Book Drive United Way Asheville2019 Holiday Book Drive Collects 2,800 Books for Local Students

Thanks to the overwhelming community support from Asheville and Buncombe County, the seventh annual Holiday Book Drive was a success, surpassing our goal and raising 2,800 books to support local elementary and middle school students. Held from November 1-December 31 in partnership with Barnes & Noble Asheville, the drive encourages local residents each year to purchase a new book while shopping at the bookstore to leave at the register as a donation. Our volunteer center Hands On Asheville-Buncombe then collects and distributes the books to local community partner organizations that ensure they reach local families for the holidays.

Since the drive's inception, 11,000+ books have been distributed to students in Buncombe County. United Way leadership giving group members and community volunteers also met for a book wrapping party on December 11 at Highland Brewing Company to package all donated books in holiday paper before they were gifted to students during winter break.

Holiday Book Drive United Way AshevilleThanks to our Generous Sponsors

We'd like to share a warm thanks to all of our wonderful 2019 Holiday Book Drive sponsors, including Barnes & Noble Asheville, Webb Investment Services, and Capstone Health Alliance.

"Capstone chose to support this project as soon as we heard about the need in the community," shared Capstone Health Alliance Chief Customer Officer Jackie Dula. "We feel blessed to have access to a variety of reading materials and believe that all children should have the same access so that they can explore, learn, and dream. Our team enjoyed picking out books that we remember reading in middle school. Thank you United Way for the opportunity to be of service."
