On Wednesday, July 20, 2016 some 16 artists and their families gathered to celebrate the opening of a new art exhibition featuring their recent works. Housed in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith Art and Intercultural Gallery, the exhibit included works in a variety of mediums from 39 artists, and was admired by members of the community, educators, prominent citizens of Asheville and the local media.
The artists, as it happens, are in middle school.
Rebecca Gibson, a student at Charles D. Owen Middle School, had two pieces selected for inclusion in the third annual Celebrating Middle School Success exhibition.
Gibson said she often incorporates words in her drawings and paintings, reflecting her dual interests in visual art and poetry. This technique is challenging, Gibson said, because “with art with words, whatever I’m drawing has to correspond with the words.”
But the biggest challenge, Gibson said, is finding a single idea to kick-start the artistic process.
