Across Asheville and Buncombe County, community-led organizations are creating spaces where students and families can connect, learn, and thrive. In 2023, four local organizations were selected to participate in United for Youth, a pilot Community Investment funding model designed to support work that is rooted in community voice, lived experience, and shared leadership.

These grants were intentionally structured to remove barriers and shift decision-making power, centering organizations and community members who are closest to the challenges and the solutions. Guided by extensive community conversations and a participatory grantmaking process, the pilot invested in initiatives that reflect what families and youth said they need most to support student success.

Funded organizations were required to design and implement work that advances United for Youth’s Bold Community GoalBy 2035, all Asheville City and Buncombe County students graduate from high school ready and fully prepared to pursue their goals and dreams.

In addition, grantees committed to meeting at least three of the following community-based priorities through their programming and events:

  • Expand equitable access to opportunities, including mental health care, tutoring, and college counseling
  • Create or strengthen access to internships and apprenticeships
  • Build meaningful connections between students, families, schools, and community role models
  • Host collaborative community events that bring people together to share skills, experiences, stories, and opportunities
  • Design programming that is welcoming, engaging, and fun for all ages
  • Provide reliable, recurring opportunities that communities can consistently count on
  • Ensure initiatives are community-built and community-led, recognizing community members as the experts
  • Uphold anti-racist practices in both design and implementation

Now just over halfway through the three-year funding period, the following highlights showcase how each grantee is bringing these themes to life through work that is community-powered, relationship-centered, and grounded in the strengths of the community.
