June 1-3 United Way representatives from all over the southeast and beyond will join together in Asheville to share best practices and learn from the best thinkers out there.  We are very excited that folks from all over will experience our wonderful community so if you see them out and about give them a big hello!   We are also proud because three of our staff members will be presenting at the conference: Lance Edwards will discuss our transformation and adoption of Education, Income and Health. Over the course of the last three months, 75 volunteer experts in their fields came together to review, rate and propose funding for programs whose outcomes best align with the needed improvements we want to see in the areas of Education, Income and Health. On May 18, the United Way Board of Directors approved their funding recommendations. Although more dollars were requested than were available in this competitive grant process, our volunteers made outstanding decisions of how to best invest United Way dollars into programs that will produce long-lasting measurable change in our community.Read more about our Investment Strategy: 2011-2012...

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County recently started sending out a monthly e-newsletter.  Now that might not seem very cutting edge, but we are trying something new and we think your business might want to be a part of it.    Each month the newsletter will feature a short video that will highlight some important feature of our work.   An embedded link at the end of the video will take viewers to a one question quiz. Those that choose the correct answer will be placed in a drawing for a modest prize/gift certificate from a local business. We'll announce the winner on Facebook and on our website. In April and May, volunteers from the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County Board of Directors, Campaign Cabinet, Focus Areas, 2-1-1 of WNC, Hands On Asheville-Buncombe and staff participated in the video shoots for the 2011 campaign video. We are happy to announce that this year 2-1-1 of WNC celebrates 10 years in the 2-1-1 call system.  While United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County had provided community information and referral services through First Call For Help since the 1970’s,  it wasn’t until the switch to the 2-1-1 call system that this critical service became firmly established in our community.   Adoption of the 2-1-1 call system allowed: Simplified Access All our residents need to remember are three numbers - 2-1-1 - to access information about community resources.
