To the Ballgame : 2023 Volunteer Appreciation Event

Without those who use their skills, bodies, and minds to work in solidarity with hundreds of local organizations, our Buncombe County and Asheville community would not be the same. Offering free time and labor because a volunteer believes in the work, sees the vision, and wants to impact the community positively is what being a good neighbor is all about. Solidarity service is often done as an act of love and comes with no expectation of reimbursement. Like Chief Tony Gutierrez from Erwin High School, who takes his JROTC students every Monday evening to Erwin Middle School Community Night featuring Homework Diners, said, “They didn’t expect any of this because they volunteer for free.”

However, on April 19th, 2023 United Way of Asheville and Buncombe took an evening to celebrate the tremendous impact volunteers have in Buncombe County. We gathered together to enjoy one of the first Tourist’s games of the 2023 season!

Gutierrez said, “My kids are beyond themselves right now because they are here at the game, got a jersey, and are just excited to be a part of this.”

Creating unique experiences where community members can convene through service and celebration is an essential part of building a community where everyone belongs and thrives.
