In case you missed it, Elisabeth Bocklet, United Way's Senior Director of Marketing and Communications and local rising senior Nyles Clark joined Melanie Wilkinson on Asheville Area Focus to talk a bit about United Way and some events happening this summer to support youth in our community.

Elisabeth (United Way), Melanie (Asheville Area Focus), and Nyles (rising senior and intern at Slay the Mic)

Nyles works with Elizabeth Garland at Slay the Mic and is a member of the planning committee for the upcoming United for Youth Block Party (August 7). Slay the Mic is heading up all the technical details when it comes to the stage performances. After giving listeners a bit of information about United Way and the United for Youth Block Party, Melanie (DJ and Asheville Area Focus host), asked Nyles what misconceptions people might have about youth. Here's his response:

We look up to the adults in our lives and kind of think, what are they doing? How can I get involved in this? And that started with me with a camera. I came into this company primarily working with cameras and videography. I saw my brother do it, my mom do it. And I really wanted to get involved with that.

And through STM Multimedia (Slay the Mic), they really gave me a chance. That turned into sampling for giving interviews, giving interviews turned to interviewing a lot of other people, it led me into more public speaking roles, which led to writing roles. And now I'm really getting a sense of ability to kind of test the waters in all these amazing, different artistic fields.

And all I can say is that if you give anybody that kind of opportunity, that they will pick it up a lot quicker.
