Distribution Information-- How Do I Get Supplies?

The donated supplies to the annual School Supply Drive are distributed to middle grades students through distribution partners serving students throughout Buncombe County. If your child is not currently enrolled in one of these partner programs, stay tuned for updates on additional supply opportunities as they become available and check in with your child's school counselor as we are making supplies available at the schools. We are working with other partners to secure additional pickup opportunities and will share those as they become available.

*Please Note: Supplies will not be available for donation or pick-up through United Way and due to COVID-19, the United Way office is currently closed.

5 Tips for Running a Successful School Supply Drive

  1. Spread the Word! Ask neighbors, friends, and family to get involved. Invite your coworkers, faith community, and members of clubs/civic groups to participate with you. Share the link to the Roonga website for them to easily and safely make an online donation to support a local student this school year.
  2. Social Media is a powerful tool! Share a post with your network about why you're getting involved in this year's School Supply Drive supporting our students to ensure they're set up for success when they enter the classroom this school year (See sample posts in our Toolkit below)! *Take a photo of yourself making the online donation and share it to inspire others and make sure you tag us on Facebook at @United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County or on Instagram at @UnitedWayABC and don't forget to use the hashtag #UnitedWayAVLSchoolSupplyDrive.
  3. Create your own team through Roonga! Share the custom link to your team drive with friends, family, and colleagues!
  4. Remind your network every few days or once a week during the drive so they don't forget as the drive is only a few weeks long. Share your page to Facebook or print and hang a poster at your work or community center.
  5. Celebrate Success! Simple, small gestures of thanks go a long way for us all and help us feel better connected and excited to lend a helping hand for one another. We've created small printable school buses that you can use to write down the names of all who have donated and post up in your break room or office.

Thank you in advance for your enthusiasm and support of this year's drive! Although it may be virtual this year to ensure our collective safety, we're excited to generate the same level of community care and involvement that we would in-person, filling the bus with donated supplies at Walmart and packing and sorting together before the supplies are distributed to our amazing partners.

About The School Supply Drive

We're gearing up for the annual School Supply Drive running June 29-July 24, 2020. The beginning of a school year is always an incredible financial hurdle for many families as they prepare students with the supplies to learn, grow, and succeed in the classroom. In light of the additional economic set-back from COVID-19 and school shifting to home-based virtual learning, the need to support our families and ensure our students have the tools they need is even greater.

Since 2007, United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County and our volunteer center Hands On Asheville-Buncombe have set out to rally community support around our elementary and middle grades students with the annual School Supply Drive. Our collective efforts have helped over 14,800 students walk into the classroom fully prepared. With your generosity and our ability to purchase supplies in bulk, this has translated into $900,000+ worth of school supplies for our students, reminding our families that they're not alone and that we will work to ensure all young people have an equal opportunity to show up with the supplies they need to succeed.
