DHG Supports Homework Diners

The good folks at Dixon Hughes Goodman (DHG) recently took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer at not just one, but two Homework Diners at Enka Middle School. A huge thank you to all who came out to help these students and their families.

Good Things Happen Around The Dinner Table

As one of four key strategies that make up our Middle School Success initiative, Homework Diners play a critical role in helping students become successful 9th graders, eventually earning their high school diploma and being prepared to enter college. How? Homework Diners offer families the opportunity to gather weekly to receive a healthy dinner and free homework help. Beyond the tutoring, Homework Diners also build the necessary relationships to ensure academic success, such as the parent-teacher relationship. Homework Diners are designed to build skills, relationships and community. Another benefit for families is the ability to bring grade school children to both receive help with their homework and become familiar with the school and its surroundings.

Volunteers are central to this effort. They tutor students in subjects such as Math, English and History. They set up the events and register the attendees. They also serve the food, clean up and break down the event afterwards. In short, volunteers make Homework Diners work!

Passion Beyond Serving Clients

DHG is a great example of local businesses working to build strong and engaged communities. DHG demonstrates a culture that seeks to put people first. More than a corporate social obligation, service to our community is a whole-hearted commitment for DHG. Every year, this organization collaborates with various partners to raise funds benefiting colleges and universities, donates millions of pounds of food to local food banks, builds houses and participates in charity runs. DHG and its employees epitomize the idea that real, impactful societal change can only happen through steadfast commitment and a sense of ownership.

Together, Stronger

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is proud to partner with DHG. Beyond the great work DHG does at Enka Homework Diners, the organization is involved with Business United — volunteering at We Care events where employees packed approximately 500 Snack Packs for local kids. In addition, for the past four years DHG has been a sponsor of United Way's Peaks Society, donating $5,000 each year. This year, DHG raised over $100,000 during Campaign which puts them over $1,000,000 employee dollars raised for our community since 2004. Shout out to DHG, its awesome employees and their dedication to making change happen!

Next Steps
