Thank You For Being A Light

As we enter this holiday season, and the final days of 2017, we hope you are well.

Lately, we’ve been thinking about the fact that we all have just this one life. Whether we burst into it full of advantages, or must navigate obstacles that just won’t stop coming, we all have at least one thing in common – we have the power to choose how we treat each other.

Because of your support, our staff members are able to work every day with people who do not have enough food, medicine, or heat. We talk to people experiencing heartbreaking loneliness and people who risk everything to build a better life for themselves and those they love. We work with people who have failed and those who have triumphed.

Because of you, we support students, families and their communities through our partnerships with other nonprofits, local governments, our public schools and local businesses. Together, we pool our resources and tackle projects that none of us can accomplish alone.

And every day our staff members also get to work with people like you. People who use this one life they have, and commit to making sure their contributions of time and money serve as the building blocks to a stronger community.

Whether our donors are making gifts of $5 or $50,000, volunteering a few times a year or every week, each is making a decision to join the fight for the education, health and financial stability of complete strangers, and the people they love.

Across the globe, December serves as a time for celebrations to people of all faiths. A few days ago Buddhists celebrated Bodhi Day. Today is a full one, from the Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Islamic celebration - Eid Milad Un Nabi and later tonight the start of Hanukkah - Jewish celebration of lights. In a few weeks, Solstice and Christmas will envelope people’s hearts.

Central to each faith celebration is the presence of light. And so, as we enter this season, all of us here at United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County want to thank you for serving as a light for this community. Our wish for you is that you experience love and light in your own home and life in the coming days.

Thank you. Thank you for choosing to Live United.

In gratitude and peace,

The staff of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County
